Kolga-Jaani test section stabilization project 10 years later

In July 2015, a significant infrastructure project was carried out in Kolga-Jaani, involving the stabilization of a gravel-surfaced test road section. The goal of the project was to improve the quality and durability of the road segment by ensuring a dust-free, stable, and sufficiently strong surface capable of withstanding local traffic loads. In the second year, the road section was treated with a bitumen emulsion and crushed stone surface (a so-called chip seal), and in the fourth year, a 4 cm thick asphalt layer was added.

StabilRoad Holding has continuously monitored the condition of the road segment over the past 10 years. As part of this monitoring, core samples have been taken from the road surface every two years to assess changes in the compressive strength of the stabilized soil through laboratory testing. The results show an average increase in compressive strength of 1.0 to 3.0 MPa over the ten-year period—an exceptionally positive outcome. Visual inspections confirm that the appearance of the stabilized road surface has remained unchanged compared to its original condition. Based on current assessments, the same level of stability and strength is expected to persist for the next 50 to 100 years.

Stabilization of the Kolga-Jaani gravel test road section

In July 2015, an important project was carried out in Kolga-Jaani, during which a test road section with a gravel surface was stabilized. The aim of the project was to improve the quality and durability of the road section, making it dust-free and stable and strong enough to withstand the traffic load of the area. Before the start of the project, the Kolga-Jaani road section was covered with gravel, which, as a dusty and unstable surface, did not meet the needs of local traffic.

The project used StabilRoad® technology, by which the existing pavement material (gravel, sand, clay) was mixed with cement and StabilRoad® additive to achieve the required stability. The thickness of the stabilized layer was 30 cm, which ensures sufficient stability and strength of the road. The first half of the section was immediately coated with a granite crushed-bitumen coating to test the durability and performance of the coating immediately after stabilization. The other half of the section was left uncovered for the winter to observe how the stabilized layer would withstand winter weather conditions. In autumn, the theme land was organized and ditches were dug to ensure effective drainage of rainwater. The following summer, the other half of the section was also covered with a granite crushed-bitumen coating.

Stabilization of the Kolga-Jaani gravel test road section was an important step in improving quality and durability. Thanks to the professional application of the Estonian Transport Board and StabilRoad® technology, the stabilized road section is now much more durable and user-friendly. This project shows how innovative and environmentally friendly solutions can significantly improve the quality and durability of infrastructure.
